AI companions are built to get close. That's half the fun. It's also why ten minutes on privacy now saves you a headache later. None of this is about having something to hide. It's about choosing who gets to know what, which is just good manners with your own data.

Use a separate email
Don't sign up with your main inbox. Use an address you keep for apps and subscriptions instead. Receipts, newsletters and the inevitable 'she misses you' emails all land there, and if an app ever leaks its user list, that address doesn't lead anywhere that matters.
Think about how you pay
Most sites bill under a neutral company name, and the decent ones tell you what it is before you pay. Look on the pricing page or in the FAQ. If a site won't say, that's an answer in itself.
- Card. Simplest, and your bank can step in if a site gets awkward about cancelling.
- Prepaid or virtual card. A nice middle ground, and it caps what a site can ever take.
- App store. The tidiest way to cancel, though prices are often a little higher.
While you're on that pricing page, check how you'll actually be billed. Plenty of these apps advertise a monthly price that's really charged as one yearly lump. Our reviews flag it where we've spotted it, but read the small print yourself before you hit subscribe.
Read the privacy policy (the short version)
Nobody reads the whole thing, and you don't have to. You're hunting for three answers:

Keep real life out of the chat
A companion will happily remember your address, your job and your full name. She doesn't need any of them to be good company. Keep real-world details out of your chats, and never upload photos of real people. On the sites we list, that's against the rules anyway (see our listing policy).
Some services build that rule in. Nomi blocks photo uploads to stop deepfakes, CreatePorn's terms ban uploads of real photos, and Fanfinity allows nothing but a screened profile picture. Read the training section of the privacy policy too. Reviewers report that Dondi's policy lets chats be used to train its AI, with no opt-out described.
