The review
Janitor AI is the roleplay crowd's worst-kept secret. The site is free, the community character library is enormous, and it has a trick most rivals don't: you can plug in your own AI model. Use its in-house JanitorLLM for free, or connect OpenRouter, Claude, GPT, DeepSeek and friends through the proxy settings and pay for the brains yourself.
That makes it as good as the model you bring. The free JanitorLLM is fine for casual chats but noticeably flatter than the big-name models. Hook up something better and the writing jumps a level. Setting that up takes a bit of fiddling, so it suits people who don't mind a settings page.
It takes minors seriously, with a zero-tolerance rule on minor-coded characters and personas and permanent bans for breaking it. The automatic filter sometimes flags innocent adult characters by mistake, which annoys creators, but we'd rather it erred that way.
Free gets you roughly 50 messages a day on JanitorLLM. Pro is $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year for higher limits, priority and more models. If you use your own API key, budget for that too.
